Local Pharmacist Honored By Peers

Sep. 27, 2006

Dr. Smith is employed at Reeves-Sain Drug Store in Murfreesboro. She completed the Doctor of Pharmacy degree at the University of Tennessee College of Pharmacy in 1991.

Dr. Smith has been responsible for the Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) Program at Reeves-Sain since its inception. Following a consultation with Dr. Smith, in which she gathers the patient history and offers a full explanation of compounded hormones and BHRT, saliva tests are conducted on each individual and sent to a lab. Those results are then returned and analyzed by Dr. Smith, who then consults with the patient’s physician to formulate the best hormone replacement for the individual, which is typically a customized compound. The work that Dr. Smith has done has made an impact on the lives of many people in the community, in addition to promoting the value and importance of compounding to physicians and patients alike.
The Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award was initiated in 1993 to recognize one pharmacist annually who has "demonstrated innovative pharmacy practice resulting in improved patient care." The award, conceived by the National Council of State Pharmacy Association Executives to provide recognition for the important role pharmacy has in providing patient counseling in a manner no one else can, is funded by Elan.

The Tennessee Pharmacists Association, a professional organization of approximately 2,000 pharmacists from all practice areas across the state, promotes the delivery of quality pharmaceutical care as a means of enhancing the knowledge, ethics and skills of pharmacists, as well as protecting and enhancing public health.
