Reeves-Sain is changing the way customers take medications

May. 07, 2007

...."It's fantastic," said Ralph Hillman, a customer who's been counting on the MediPACK service for a year. "I don't have to go through the bottles each time to get my pills. And I don't forget. If that packet is gone, I've taken my pills. For me, that's the most outstanding feature."

The packets have already been sorted by a pharmacist and feature the doctor's instructions for taking them.

The pharmacy had offered this service to nursing-home patients a decade ago before deciding there was a demand for other customers, said Shane Reeves, co-owner of Reeves-Sain.

He and his partner, Rick Sain, launched the MediPACK service in November 2005. Since then, about 250 patients have received their medications through the service.

"This whole concept is the tip of the spear as to where we're going in the next five years," said Reeves, who also has customers outside of Rutherford County. "We want to grow in the thousands. There's no one doing this in the entire South."

Reeves-Sain has a delivery staff that brings a supply of the daily medication packages to local residents. The business also mails packages to others outside the area.

Reeves-Sain invested around $750,000 to purchase three AutoMed machines that can sort and package the daily prescriptions in a safe manner, Reeves said.

Staff members, such as Jessica Henson, monitor the digital machines and type in orders from customers.

"I think it's a great service," Henson said. "I'm on the phone with doctors, patients and caregivers. It's really beneficial to the patients. I enjoy helping the patients on a day-to-day basis."

This product also makes it easy for family members looking after parents or grandparents who reside elsewhere, Reeves said.

Business travelers who need to take multiple medications can also benefit by carrying prescription packages that include labels for each day, he added.

"There has never been a better time than right now for MediPACK," Reeves said.

Billions of dollars are spent, for example, to treat patients because they took the wrong medication, Reeves said.

Demand will increase, as well, when Baby Boomers become senior citizens, Reeves said.

Customers, such as Hillman, appreciate the MediPACK service.

"They deliver it automatically," Hillman said. "They redo the prescription, so you don't have to call it in. You can't beat it. It's hard to find anything wrong with it."
